Family Services

The Association for the Advancement of Blind and Retarded, Inc. (AABR) is a parent-founded, non-profit, non-sectarian, city-wide organization.  It has been serving persons with developmental disability and their families since 1956.  The Family Services Unit provides Medicaid Service Coordination (MSC) to developmentally disabled individuals and their families living in the community.

        WHAT IS MEDICAID SERVICE COORDINATION ?

Medicaid Service Coordination is a program that provides assistance for referral and linkage to obtain the following services:

  • Medical    

  • Dental 

  • Psychiatric 

  • Educational 

  • Vocational 

  • Financial Assistance / SSI / SSA

  • Residential Placement

  • In-Home Behavioral Management 

  • Respite (In-Home or Drop Off)

  • Residential Habilitation (in-home 1:1 training)

  • Day Treatment/ Day Habilitation Placement

  • Psychological/ Counseling services

  • Counseling

  • Nutritional Counseling and follow-up

  • Legal Aide

  • Guardianship Assistance

  • Housing/ Section VIII

  • Diagnostic Evaluations

  • Other services for the developmentally disabled individual.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR MEDICAID SERVICE COORDINATION (MSC) ?

To be eligible for service coordination, one must be diagnosed with mental retardation, cerebral palsy, seizure disorder, autism, Down Syndrome or a developmental disability, be eligible for Medicaid and live with family members or independently in Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Manhattan.

WHAT IS A SERVICE COORDINATOR ?

A Medicaid Service Coordinator is a trained professional who works with the individual and their family, assisting them in providing linkage & referral, service planning and follow-up for required services.  Advocacy, translation services and assistance in arranging for Medicaid transportation may also be provided.

IS THERE A FEE FOR SERVICES ?

The program is funded by Medicaid.  The services will be funded by Medicaid as long as the individual is an active Medicaid participant.  If a child is under the age of 18 and is not eligible for Medicaid, he/she may be eligible for Medicaid through Waiver Services such as Residential Habilitation or Day Habilitation.
