The Association for the Advancement of Blind and Retarded, Inc., has as its purpose to help people with multiple disabilities find meaningful lives.

The thrift shop, know as the Treasure Box, is the latest of AABR's innovative programs developed to carry out its mission, "that each life may had meaning." The Treasure Box provides the perfect opportunity for person centered learning.  AABR individuals, by working in an environment where naturally occurring situations take place, have the opportunity to interact with neighbors and other members of the community.

The individuals learn to become more independent and productive by participating in activities that non disabled individuals take for granted.

Activities in the thrift shop include: greeting and assisting customers; answering phones and taking messages; operating the cash register and making correct change; tagging, bagging and stocking items; taking inventory; and changing clothing displays according to the season.

Behind the scenes office activities include: typing thank you letters and promotional flyers; stuffing envelopes; mailing and general post office skills; and banking skills.

Building maintenance activities include: dusting furniture and shelves; sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors; polishing furniture; maintaining clean restroom and kitchenette area; and maintaining clean sidewalks and the delivery area.

Each of these mastered activities fosters social awareness and the development of social skills.  Almost as importantly, the presence of AABR individuals in the Treasure Box raises the consciousness of community residents as to the abilities and unique talents of the disabled in our charge.
