An Applied Behavioral Analytic Intervention Program for Pre-School and School-Age Children with Autism

About The Institute

In 1994, the New York Child Learning Institute, a program of AABR, was founded as a state certified, nonpublic preschool for children with autism. In 1995, educational services were extended to school-age children between the ages of five and eleven. The institute implements a science-based educational approach and is committed to providing the highest standard of education for its students.

The educational services offered by the institute include center-based and in-home individualized behavioral intervention for children with autism. Autism is a pervasive developmental disability that is characterized by severe deficits in social and language development. With effective educational intervention, these children can learn critical language, social and academic skills.  As competencies in these skill areas develop, the children begin to build meaningful relationships with others and live more productive lives.

The institute's educational model is based on the principles of applied behavior analysis, which has been demonstrated to produce effective outcomes for children with autism. The application of this science-based educational model is enhanced by the warmth and dedication of the professional teaching staff.

A Replication

The New York Child Learning Institute is a replication of the Princeton Child Development Institute's effective intervention model. This model has been well-documented to produce educational and treatment gains that enable many children to acquire language, social, and academic skills comparable to their typical peers.  PCDI is respected as one of the top research and educational institutes for individuals with autism in the world. The families and professionals of NYCLI are fortunate to benefit from their expertise.

A Data-Based, Scientific Approach to Education

At NYCLI, experienced instructors carefully select and define specific educational goals for each child. Working together as an effective team, they design and implement instructional procedures that reflect current research findings on teaching and treatment methodology.

Instruction is presented in intensive one-on-one sessions interspersed with small group sessions. These sessions are designed to meet the individual needs of each child in areas such as language development, socialization, academics, and independence.

Instructors record and graph child performance data daily. This allows objective evaluation of a child's progress and readiness to move to new areas of skills training. These data also assist the professional staff in developing and modifying teaching strategies.

Family Empowerment

Major emphasis is placed on including parents in the educational process. Institute staff work in the home together with parents to develop and implement programs that will help integrate the child into the family. Parents receive ongoing assistance and support that promote the transfer of children's newly acquired skills from school to home.

Our goal is for each child enrolled in the program to benefit from enriched family life and community involvement and to decrease his or her need for ongoing specialized educational and treatment services.

A Brighter Future

The Institute helps each student achieve significant milestones. Children learn to use language, to play together, to talk to their parents, and to read and write their first words. These accomplishments represent the beginning steps toward a brighter future for each child. We are proud of the successes of the children.

Though continued affiliation with PCDI, and participation in university internship programs, NYCLI looks forward to becoming a leader in the fields of education and treatment for children with autism and their families.

The children and families we serve are the first and foremost priority in everything we do regardless of race, gender, religion, or culture.
